Milan Furniture Fair Celebrates 50 Years

By P. Joseph

One of the world’s biggest design shows will celebrate its 50th birthday when it kicks off next week in the Italian city of Milan.

The Salone del Mobile furniture fair has come a long way since the inaugural event in 1961, which attracted just 12,000 visitors. Today the 6-day expo draws crowds of almost 300,000.

Taking place at Milan’s Rho exhibition complex , the fair will provide a chance to see, touch and sample the best products the world of domestic furnishing has to offer – including beds, wardrobes, chairs, interior and exterior lighting systems, and office furniture.

Some of the major features at the event include an International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, an International Lighting Exhibition and an International Biennial Workspace Exhibition.

The Salone del Mobile Salone was founded by leading furniture manufacturers based near Milan in order to give small- and medium-sized companies the opportunity to sell products worldwide, as well as to a larger Italian market.
