A True Embodiment of Wisdom: Project Sophia’s Hull and Superstructure Joined
Heesen Yachts has announced that a highly significant milestone in the construction of YN 21150 has been reached: the joining of her hull and superstructure. Code-named Project Sophia, she is the perfect example of where wisdom meets waves, representing the pinnacle of superyacht craftsmanship combined with cutting-edge design and efficiency.
On the 26th of June 2024, Heesen Yachts’ Project Sophia completed a pivotal step in her construction phase, with her hull and superstructure successfully joined. This 50m fast cruising yacht exemplifies the Dutch yard’s unmatched expertise in building aluminium vessels with reduced fuel consumption, featuring exterior design by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and interiors by Cristiano Gatto.
With her code-name rooted in wisdom, skill and intelligence, Heesen has already clued the industry on the craftsmanship and innovation that characterises Project Sophia. Coupled with the association with Sophia Loren, an actress renowned for her charming beauty and unparalleled talent, the overall aesthetic of this yacht is, not so subtly, hinted at.
The joining showcased the technological beauty that normally goes unseen as it resides below the waterline, as Project Sophia emerged from the shed after Heesen’s skilled craftsmen completed the welding. Unlike most shipyards, Heesen constructs its own aluminium hulls in-house: a grand tradition that underscores the shipyard’s dedication to meticulous craftsmanship.
To ensure that each weld meets the highest standards of excellence, becoming a certified welder for the Dutch yard requires over 500 hours of intensive training: yet another way in which Heesen’s commitment to delivering yachts of the highest quality can be seen.
Project Sophia features a hard-chine shallow hull, with a draft of only 2.15m, ensuring that she can cruise in even the shallowest of waters. Efficiency is enhanced by a sleek underwater body, making Project Sophia 12 percent more fuel-efficient than other traditional designs. She can reach a top speed of 23 knots, and boasts a transatlantic range of 3,100nm at her cruising speed of 11 knots.
Up to 12 guests can be accommodated across five elegant staterooms, configured as a serene master suite on the main deck and four guest cabins on the lower deck. Project Sophia offers unparalleled comfort and luxury to those onboard, with ample space for family and friends to relax and socialise alike, boasting 324 sqm of interior space and 250 sqm of outdoor areas.
Her stunning interior design is marked by a harmonious balance of sophistication, functionality and aesthetic appeal, featuring a careful selection of materials, textures and colours. The result is a space that boasts a refined luxury, inspired by the notion that wisdom permeates every aspect of life. This show-stopping interior by Cristiano Gatto is available in two additional atmospheres, appealing to a variety of preferences.
Project Sophia is currently available for sale, and is due for delivery in Q1 2026. She represents the unique opportunity to own a yacht of exceptional Dutch-quality in a shortened build time: a true example of where wisdom meets waves.
