ATLANTIDE: The Reawakening of a Legend

By Frances Flannagan

Launched 94 years ago, the iconic yacht ATLANTIDE has undergone a dramatic rebuild at Royal Huisman, as she enters the spotlight as a completely new vessel. What began as a few repairs resulted in a total reimagining, now defined by both her unique heritage and character blended with a modern and sophisticated design.

ATLANTIDE arrived at Royal Huisman in 2021 for what was supposed to be some repairs and interior modifications. This resulted in a full rebuild, with 40 percent of her hull, deck and frames replaced alongside a complete reimagining of every aspect of her interior and systems, despite her original Gardner diesels.

Her current owner has built three sailing yachts at Royal Huisman: HYPERION, ATHENA and HANUMAN, and ATLANTIDE was the perfect addition to this collection.

The scope of the project was unable to be determined by the team, as the vessel had not been seen out of the water. Once hauled at the yard, the workmen discovered the extent of the work that was required, and so a rebuild commenced.

The team studied, scanned and redesigned the boat in 3D, applying ‘sailboat thinking’ to plan the new equipment, systems and lights. There had also been no insulation in her hull, so in-house pipefitters were required to customise pieces to implement in her design.

Her Owners wished for ATLANTIDES’ post-war profile to remain the same, whilst they wanted the interiors to be simplified, replacing the Art Deco features with more modest designs.

Jim Clark, ATLANTIDE’s Owner, commented: ‘What I like is the historic quality of this boat; nothing is plastic. I’m a classic boat snob. I like the old wood look; big modern boats do nothing for me.’

A standout element of her design is her three story main staircase, which has been completely updated in a style that is reflective of the 1930s. The high-gloss teak and holly sole has been swapped out for wide-planked natural finish walnut, exuding warmth and elegance.

The main saloon is characterised by stunning French-blue sofas for relaxation, and the former indoor dining saloon has been transformed into a lavish media room. Her Owner and guests can make the most of their surrounding environments with the new aft deck dining area, positioned under a fixed bimini awning with removable weather curtains.

ATLANTIDE’s primary use will be as a day boat, as well as a tender to HANUMAN at bucket races.

The exceptional team at Royal Huisman completed this rebuild with unmatched skill and craftsmanship. ATLANTIDE retains her distinctive heritage, whilst now featuring the modern day sophistications that will elevate the onboard experience to unprecedented levels.
