Eco-Friendly Debuts at Cannes Yachting Festival 2023
With eco-friendly solutions on the rise throughout the yachting industry, Cannes Yachting Festival is working towards the greener future of yachting. Following the ethos of the festival, there are a number of debuts set to attend Cannes that have all been built with sustainability in mind.
Cannes Yachting Festival is dedicated to the future of sustainability in the nautical industry; the show has adopted a ‘Green Route’ to highlight the sustainable solutions that exhibitors have developed as well as having an eco-friendly approach towards the general running of the festival, including the use of recycled/recyclable materials and an effective waste management system.
With the rise of eco-friendly solutions in the yachting industry, a number of yachts that have been built with the environment in mind are set to attend the festival. Three exciting debuts showcase impressive eco-friendly qualities: NYUMBA, Long Island 86 Power, and Magellano 60. All three present different green solutions, and reflect the ethos of Cannes Yachting Festival by striving towards a sustainable future.
NYUMBA - 29m
NYUMBA is the first hybrid sailboat in the Southern Wind fleet. She is a comfortable, reliable and sustainable 29m yacht that has been developed in collaboration with BAE Systems which have their own system that is engineered to be compliant with the strictest of environmental rules. This means that NYUMBA has zero emissions capability and a HydroGeneration mode to recharge the Lithium-ion energy storage when under sail. BAE Systems ensure the highest system efficiency, meaning that noise free zero emissions can be enjoyed for longer.
Massimo Gino of Nauta Design commented, ‘Nyumba deck design is the evolution of the successful GT deck concept, already applied on the newly launched SW105 GT Taniwha with several details that have been designed specifically to meet the owner’s request. Clear, uncluttered deck equipment positioning allows for easy circulation on board and the mainsail track and steering positions are completely new. The GT styling makes everything look breath-taking in its simplicity and lightness.’
The spectacular performance capabilities as well as the sophisticated design of NYUMBA are evident, showing how she is a yacht that exudes both style and sustainability.
Long Island 86 Power - 26m
The Long Island 86 Power is an addition to JFA Yachts’ ‘Long Island’ catamaran range. Being the only catamarans to have aluminium hulls and composite decks, this range sets themselves apart from any other yachts in the catamaran market. Marc Lombard of Marc Lombard Design Group, who penned the naval architecture, commented: ‘Long Island catamarans are simple, efficient, seaworthy… and refined.’ The Long Island 86 Power certainly lives up to these words, with impressive living spaces accommodating up to eight guests, who can enjoy a sheltered bar, large saloon and jacuzzi, and bright interior layouts which blur the boundaries between the outdoors and indoors.
The efficient nature of the Long Island 86 Power can be seen in its nod towards the greener future of the yachting industry; this spectacular catamaran can be offered with a conventional or a hybrid propulsion system to be able to move in silent mode between two anchorages. This will lessen the overall emissions, showing how she has been developed with an eco-friendly mindset.
Magellano 60 - 18m
Azimut’s Magellano 60 has been described as ‘an ode to freedom and elegance’; a charming 18.47m yacht that is as sophisticated as she is sustainable. The exteriors offer an unparalleled view of the horizon, allowing guests to become fully immersed in their surroundings. The interiors boast a dining area which sits before a floor-to-ceiling window, contributing to the indoor-outdoor connection. She is warm and welcoming, an oasis of well-being.
Although timeless in her design, the Magellano 60 represents the future of innovative yachting. Fuel consumption is decreased by 20 percent compared to other yachts of this size due to its Dual Mode hull and diverse cruising speeds. She was also selected to trial the HVOlution biofuel during her maiden voyage, a significant step towards environmentally friendly solutions.
These three eco-friendly yachts are set to stun visitors at Cannes, a yachting festival dedicated to sustainable solutions, as they each represent the diverse range of innovative ways in which the industry is striving towards a greener future.
"Because ecological transition is essential, the Yachting Festival has created a 'Green Route' for showcasing environmentally-friendly solutions developed and exhibited at the trade fair."
