H2 Yacht Design Talks Top 100: Quality Over Quantity in the Large Yachts Segment

By Zoe Coughlan

Jonny Horsfield, Owner and Creative Director of H2 Yacht Design, offered a fascinating perspective on the rapid development of the superyacht industry, as well as the impressive range of projects his studio has worked on, both past and present.

Reflecting on the evolution of the superyacht sector since H2 Yacht Design was founded, Horsfield explained that his brand initially worked on yachts around 60 metres in length, but today, their projects span the impressive 120m-130m range. This shift highlights the extraordinary growth and innovation that has characterised the industry in recent years, with the demand for bigger projects rising exponentially.

A key point of discussion was H2’s involvement with AL LUSAIL, a 123m yacht that currently ranks as the 30th largest yacht in the world. Horsfield spoke about the bespoke nature of the design process, noting how they worked closely with the owners to craft a truly one-of-a-kind vessel. He commented:

‘She has an amazing combination of curves and aggressive features […] overall she has an unusual profile […] and I am very proud of it.’

Horsfield also shared insights on the fascinating REV Ocean, a 194.9m vessel that is set to become the largest superyacht ever built. Scheduled to launch later this year, REV is not only a superyacht but also a state-of-the-art research vessel, notably ‘the most sophisticated research vessel ever built.’ Unlike typical superyachts, she boasts a highly bespoke interior design that complements its unique status and dual-purpose functionality.

Looking ahead, H2 Yacht Design acknowledged a shift in the superyacht market, with the sector following global economic trends. Horsfield pointed out that while the market is maturing, there has been a recent boom, with a greater emphasis on the quality of yachts rather than the quantity. This focus on refinement is driving innovation and pushing design boundaries, resulting in increasingly sophisticated and cutting-edge yachts, a natural progression for the industry.

The future of the industry looks bright, with H2 Yacht Design’s continued commitment to pioneering new ideas and delivering bespoke, innovative vessels.
