Lürssen: Dominating the Top 100 Largest Superyachts

By Frances Flannagan

Founded in 1875, German shipyard Lürssen Yachts has built over 13,000 boats since the company’s inception, delivering more Top 100 superyachts than any other shipyard in the world. Remarkably, 35 out of the Top 100 yachts are Lürssen-builds, holding the top spot with 180.6m AZZAM and 99th spot with 90m NORN. We take a look at five of Lürssen’s largest superyachts that are all within the top 10 largest yachts in the world, showcasing the shipyard's empire within the industry.

AZZAM - 180.6m - Number 1

Built in 2013, AZZAM’s launch was not just a milestone in Lürssen’s history but in the yachting industry as a whole: with an LOA of 180.6m, she is the largest private yacht in the world.

The brief for this superyacht was to build a luxurious large vessel that featured timeless yet innovative design elements to enable travel at high speeds, whilst including sophisticated accommodation. Her exterior styling was penned by Nauta Yachts and her interior design by Christophe Leoni who came together to create what is one of the most challenging and complex yachts ever to be seen.

As well as breaking grounds in terms of dimensions, AZZAM is also groundbreaking with regards to technology and performance; she is able to reach top speeds of over 30 knots and was built in just three years following one year of engineering.

BLUE - 160m - Number 5

At 20.6m shorter than AZZAM, 160m BLUE is Lürssen’s second largest build that ranks at number 5 according to the Superyachts.com Top 100 list. She was built in 2022, with a contemporary exterior and fresh interior penned by Terence Disdale Design.

Key drivers for the technology onboard this yacht were efficiency and sustainability: BLUE is equipped with a Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed in-house by the German yard’s specialists, alongside an Azimuth Pod Drive, an electric mode which can be used separately.

BLUE is completed with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system, which leads to less noise and vibration and a reduction in nitrogen oxide levels. The wastewater treatment plant is another technological highlight: it is equipped with new membrane technology that allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in ‘drinking water quality.’

DILBAR - 156m - Number 6

DILBAR was launched in 2016 after being in construction for over four years. Lürssen has recognised her as one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built with regards to dimensions and technology.

She has a classic profile with a light ivory hull and bronze accents, her exteriors developed by Espen Oeino International. Winch Design penned her spectacular interior, which features rare and exclusive luxury materials.

She features entertainment and recreation spaces never before seen on a yacht, including a 25m swimming pool that holds 180m³ of water; the largest pool ever to be installed on a yacht.

AL SAID - 155m - Number 7

Custom-built in 2008, AL SAID is a 155m motor yacht that features exterior styling by Espen Oeino and interior design by Redman Whitely Dixon. She was delivered to the Sultan of Oman as a replacement for a smaller mega yacht and, like most royal superyachts, little has been revealed about her features.

She features six large decks, a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and is capable of reaching 25 knots.

DILBAR is speculated to be able to accommodate up to 70 guests and 154 crew, ensuring a relaxed and luxurious onboard experience. According to reports, she features a concert room capable of accommodating a 50 piece orchestra, showing AL SAID to be a highly grand vessel.

A+ - 147.3m - Number 8

A+ was launched in 2012, featuring Disdale exterior design and exquisite interiors crafted by Tim Heywood Design. She is a royally-owned superyacht, and therefore not much is known other than her basic specifications and the fact that she can accommodate an incredible 62 guests and 79 crew members.

For a boat of her size, A+ has impressive performance capabilities with a cruising speed of 19.5 knots and maximum speed of 22 knots.
