MYS 2022: Old Doha Port Prepares for World Cup Superyacht Influx
With the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 in full swing, Shari Liu was joined in our Interview Studio by special guests representing Old Doha Port in Qatar. Mohammed Abdulla Al-Mulla, Executive Director of Old Doha Port, and Grant Holmes, Global Sector Head of the Cruise & Superyacht Sector for Inchcape, shared insight into how the marina has prepared to welcome superyachts for the upcoming FIFA World Cup later this year.
While it is certainly an unusual time of year to be gearing up for the World Cup, the iconic tournament is fast approaching and guests will be planning how to best experience the football frenzy in Qatar come November. The country has invested heavily into its infrastructure to meet FIFA requirements and ensure the best possible experience for visitors. This is certainly evident with the preparations made by Old Doha Port marina, providing an idyllic base for superyachts before, during, and after the event.
As Mohammed Abdulla Al-Mulla explains, Old Doha Port has evolved from its roots as a commercial port to become a luxury superyacht marina capable of hosting and servicing large international superyachts. The newly developed marina has is centred around experience and showcasing Qatari hospitality, while also offering premium facilities to cater to the yachts while they are in the region.
With 60 berths ranging from 50m to 160m, and a state-of-the-art facility merely 30-minutes from any of the stadiums, Old Doha Port provides the perfect base to explore the World Cup host country. The marina’s investment is part of an initiative that aims to have a legacy impact that lasts well beyond the World Cup.
“We in Qatar have been catching up and hosting mega events regionally and continentally,” says Mohammed Abdulla Al-Mulla. “It goes without saying that the World Cup is a different ball game, and we have noticed its impact especially in Russia for example.
“People didn’t have too much information about Russia, but we have seen how the World Cup has helped the tourism aspect a lot… We count a lot on the World Cup to help to showcase the Qatar infrastructure as well as hospitality.”
Inchcape Shipping Services has been appointed as exclusive Port and Logistics Agents for superyachts during the World Cup by the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.
“We’ve made space especially so we can welcome more superyacht owners, whether for charter or for the owners themselves,” says Inchcape’s Grant Holmes. “We can service them, we have all the logistics ready in time for the World Cup and they will be taken care of at Old Doha Port.”
As a cruising destination, the Middle East is growing in prominence and appeal for yachts. The Old Doha Port is convenient in its proximity to the city as well as all FIFA World Cup stadiums, however there is much more to look forward to both in Qatar and the surrounding areas.
Before and after the World Cup, there is an abundance of natural splendour and plenty of thrilling activities to discover throughout Qatar and the neighbouring countries.
The Middle East is a rapidly growing superyacht hub, both in terms of its marine infrastructure and its cruising opportunities. With the World Cup around the corner, there is no better way to experience the thrills than by yacht.
