MYS 2023: Antigua & Barbuda on Exciting Future Plans
We were joined by Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority's Cherrie Osborne, Director of Tourism for UK & Europe, Alan Hosam, Deputy Chairman, and Devin Joesph, Chairman of the Yachting & Sailing Committee at our interview studio here in Monaco. Delving into Antigua’s sensational superyacht prospects, the FAM Trip, as well as exciting future developments, Antigua & Barbuda is showcased to the industry as an unforgettable superyacht destination.
Known for its rich yachting history, Antigua & Barbuda has been a delight for sailors for decades, with its waters and trail winds lending themselves to perfect yachting conditions. Antigua has become a hub for superyachts as the ideal destination, with secluded offshore islands, hundreds of beaches, and a beautiful coastline.
Devin Joeseph, Chairman of the Yachting & Sailing Committee, gave us an insight into the reasons behind this very committee, designed to assist in the development of the yachting industry, due to its rapid growth. Placing a focus on upgrading facilities, accommodation, and services, as well as being supported by the government in marketing and executing events, this committee will ensure that all visitors will have an unforgettable time in Antigua.
The Caribbean's best-kept secret, Barbuda, represents an exciting new dimension to the islands as a destination with many new developments. It has a new airport, as well as the NOBU INN, an extension of the renowned restaurant, notably the only NOBU in the Caribbean where you can ‘swim between courses.’
The FAM TRIP, which has been described as a ‘fantastic initiative’ developed by Superyachts.com, showcases the wonders that Antigua has to offer as a charter destination.
Cherrie Osborne commented: ‘What really struck me with the FAM Trip was the crew that were a part of it. They knew Antigua, but they didn't know outside Nelson’s Dockyard and Falmouth Harbour and that sort of thing, so I think the FAM trip was a good opportunity to actually experience the length and breadth of the destination.’
The Barbuda documentary, which is premiering later this year, is bound to be just as successful, displaying how the island is the ideal destination for superyachts and giving, ‘captains a perspective of what they can do on [the] island and bring it to the forefront.’
In the next five years, Antigua is aiming to be at the top of the yachting industry. Many plans and developments are underway to allow for the island to thrive within the yachting world, planning to make improvements year by year so they are not left behind. Antigua is a stunning location and an incredible destination to visit, as well as an island that is characterised by the people, something which Alan Hosam acknowledged: ‘from the beginning, when you come to Antigua, and you meet the taximen, they’re the ones that are really ambassadors for us, and we have to acknowledge that, and know that they’re very important, and everyone else that's there working for the country. It’s a collaboration of all, so we have to say thank you to everyone.’
