Nauta Design Reveals Details About the First SW108 GELLICEAUX

By Frances Flannagan

Delivered in October 2023, Nauta Design’s GELLICEAUX is a stunning addition to its fleet: classy, cool and highly sophisticated. The Italian design studio has revealed more details about her stunning design, from show-stopping exterior features to beautifully crafted interior elements.

GELLICEAUX is the first unit in Southern Wind’s 35.41m SW108 Smart Custom series, designed from the outset as a diesel-electric hybrid. She features naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design and exterior and interior design by Nauta.

Massimo Gino, co-founder of Nauta Design, commented: ‘From a design point of view Gelliceaux is the latest in the ‘GT’ series of Southern Wind bluewater sailing yachts that started the SW105 Taniwha and then the SW96 Nyumba. During this creative evolution the exterior lines have been tailored to become more sporty and dynamic with the Owner’s involvement. Gelliceaux’s deckhouse is clad in teak with a huge central skylight and the teak side decks aft morph into ‘floating’ bench seats that also provide a handy platform for winches.’

The Z-shaped composite coaming of the deckhouse is another show-stopping exterior detail, lending the yacht a low-rise, agile look.

Her interior is characterised by a calming, Mediterranean feel, with a natural colour palette, fabric-lined walls and contrasting light and dark veneers. The overall atmosphere onboard is classy but cool, understated yet sophisticated, exuding luxury as well as comfort.

The fixed furniture has been built to appear more free-standing, attributing a more cosy feeling to the indoor areas, typical of an open space interior. The sofa seating in the airy, split-level saloon is big and comfy, reminiscent of residential design, with every single item except the chairs around the eight person dining table being bespoke.

With the absence of any stainless steel accents throughout GELLICEAUX’s interiors, satin-finished black prevails, contributing to a contemporary and modern feel. This same meticulous attention to detail can be seen in the lighting design: practical and atmospheric, whilst increasing the sense of space. The headboards in the cabins are made of panels arranged in ‘relief’, creating different shadows for a sense of depth, with different mock-ups made with the lighting spaced at different distances to get the shadows just right.

GELLICEAUX was delivered in October 2023, and has since sailed almost 12,000 miles, even crossing the Atlantic to head to the Caribbean. This undisputed test for the boat proves her seaworthiness, which mirrors the spectacular nature of her design.
