Orams Marine Debut New 820 Tonne Travel Lift

By George Bains

New Zealand shipyard Orams Marine has hauled out the first vessel using its 820-tonne travel lift, marking the start of a new era in superyacht refit within the Pacific.

The 820-tonne travel lift is the latest addition to the already extensive capabilities of Auckland-based Orams Marine, one of the leading facilities for superyacht refit and repair in the South Pacific. A vessel of 34.8-metres became the first ever to be hauled out using the new lift, with the shipyard capable of accommodating the largest yachts cruising the Pacific.

The yacht was lifted on the morning of 13 January in Orams Marine’s central Auckland precinct. After a smooth and successful completion of the haul out, the vessel is now within Orams’ new hardstand area.

The addition of the 820-tonne marine travel lift is part of a wide-ranging expansion at Orams. The expansion also included creating the extra hardstand, doubling the capacity for marine service companies, an 85-tonne travel lift, all adding to the existing 600-tonne slipway.

Inbuilt to the project is a water treatment plant which ensures the facility is a world-leader in the refit market in protecting the environment, as well as three 90 metre marina fingers, the installation of which will begin in March. The result is a full-service refit destination able to cater to a broad range of vessels.

Orams Marine has served the marine industry from its Auckland location for 35 years and CEO, Neven Barbour says the new additions create a world-class facility in a world-class location.

Many of the on-site marine trades and services will expand their capacity and capabilities as new premises are built to accommodate their growth.

The 32,000 square metre site is set in the heart of Auckland’s marine precinct in a prime waterfront location, and is a short walk from the 36th America’s Cup village as well as Auckland’s CBD. This world-class yard has become a favourite with refitting crew due to its high-quality work, excellent amenities nearby, attractive and secure crew housing, and easy access to Auckland’s Harbour and Hauraki Gulf islands.

New Zealand and Australia offer refit and maintenance powerhouses to service the Asia Pacific region, ensuring superyachts have everything needed to be able to explore the region’s infinite natural splendour. As a gateway to some of the most-adventurous cruising grounds in the world, the Orams Marine team is adept at refitting yachts which need to be prepared for any cruising conditions.
