'Rhode Island Chic' Onboard 56m Explorer Blue II
It would be no understatement to describe Blue II, the latest 56m luxury explorer yacht launched by Turquoise Yachts, as ‘against-the-grain’. Blue II was recently shot off the coast of Capri, where she flaunted her unique exterior to talented yacht photographer Guillaume Plisson. We took a closer look with a word from the designer, Andre Hoek, to better understand the philosophy behind her ‘modern-classic’ design.
With an ice-class hull, IMO Tier III-compliant propulsion and an impressive interior volume, Blue II would - on paper at least - seem to treasure form over function. One look at her distinctive blue and white exterior, which conjures up images of classic steam ships from a bygone era, proves this is not the case. As designer Andre Hoek put it best, ‘Blue II might look like a yacht more at home cruising the Cote d’Azur, but masking her timeless, classic looks is a tough expedition yacht with hull lines and seagoing ability more akin to the ocean-going tug.’
Blue II’s design merges classic influences with the best of modern technology, including an optimised hull form and diesel electric propulsion allowing for more sustainable cruising.
With an understated chic interior design echoing the nautical influences of her exterior, Blue II strikes an elegant balance between luxurious and cosy. Her layout and interior styling was a collaboration of three industry greats - Hoek Design, Vickers Studio and Dols and Company Interiors. Characterised by subtle teak detailing and a contemporary edge, the talented design team made a point of integrating cosy and intimate spaces.
This is balanced by expansive open deck spaces for relaxation and socialising, including an outdoor lounge for large parties and outdoor dining table. Exterior deck spaces are furnished by light blue and white upholstery, reflecting the yacht’s natural surroundings and imbibing an atmosphere of complete tranquility. Coupled with below deck storage for tenders and toys, Blue II is the perfect yacht for transitioning between quality time and adventure at sea.
Elaborating on the demand for this very specific fusion of elements, Andre Hoek told Superyachts.com: ‘This yacht combines appealing looks with a purpose which I believe many American and European clients are looking for. She undoubtedly stands out from many other modern yachts and can be justly described as unique!’
Paying homage to a bygone era of yachting, Blue II’s tangible modern flair and effortless style is a hallmark of the very best in yacht design. And as Turquoise Yachts’ first IMO Tier III compliant and first ice-class superyacht, Blue II is sure to prove an industry benchmark in more ways than one.
